A Scenic Region of Georgia Untouched by Civilization Tusheti is an ideal destination for wildlife lovers. This remote region remains untouched by modern civilization, and every house in the local villages holds cultural heritage status! We will reach the Tusheti National Park by off-road vehicle, ascending to Abano Pass (2,900 meters above sea level). From here, we enter the isolated world of Tusheti, where nature reigns supreme. For four days, we will explore the region by mountain bike, followed by one day of horseback riding, immersing ourselves in wild landscapes and breathtaking mountain scenery!
Day 1: Flight to Tbilisi Upon arrival in Tbilisi, you will independently transfer to the hotel. In the evening, a meeting for MTB tour participants will take place at the hotel. The group will gather for a briefing and instructions before the start of the cycling tour. Participants will also select and prepare their bikes.
Early Morning Departure to Omalo via Abano Pass In the early morning, we will load our gear and equipment into a 4x4 Delica minibus and set off for the Alazani Valley, the birthplace of Georgia’s finest wines. Along the way, we will take a break for a meal. The off-road ascent by jeep begins on a challenging and dangerous rocky road. Despite being only 70 kilometers, this journey will take almost the entire day. Two-thirds of the route consists of a serpentine mountain climb, crossing steep and majestic slopes. At Abano Pass (2,926 m above sea level), we will take a short break to catch our breath before descending. The final third of the route is another steep descent and ascent on an equally treacherous road. This section will be completed by bike. Afterward, we will load the bikes back into the vehicle, as a final climb to Omalo village awaits. Those who wish can continue cycling. Notably, the Telavi-Omalo road was featured in the BBC series "The World's Most Dangerous Roads." Omalo serves as the local administrative center, though in a geographical sense rather than an urban one. It is a small village where all roads converge. If time permits, we will take a short walk to Upper Omalo, home to a group of ancient towers known as Keselo Fortress. From here, we will enjoy breathtaking views of the remote and rugged landscapes of Tusheti. We then return to Lower Omalo to our guesthouse. Those who wish can relax in a traditional wood-fired sauna. Dinner with traditional Georgian cuisine.
Breakfast. Today, we will explore several Tusheti villages. Our first stop is Dartlo, where every house holds cultural heritage status. We will then continue our ride to the villages of Dano, Chesho, and Parsma. In Parsma, located at 2,100 meters above sea level, we will see an impressive complex of tower houses, a remarkable example of traditional Tushetian architecture. Dinner. Optional sauna available.
Breakfast. Today, we will visit the villages of Shenako and Diklo. The first one is just 4 kilometers away, but the path is blocked by a deep gorge with one of the main rivers of Tusheti – Pirikitskaya Alazani. Now, we ascend a steep climb to the opposite side of the gorge. In the village of Shenako, there is the Sameba Temple, built in 1843, and local shrine "niches"—a relic of pagan beliefs. This area is traditionally forbidden for women to enter. The village of Diklo is located right next to the border with Dagestan. We then return to Omalo. Dinner. A sauna is available. Cycling distance: approx. 25 km Elevation gain: approx. 600 m.
Breakfast. Today, there is an opportunity to change activities. We will swap bicycles for Tushetian horses and embark on a day-long horseback journey to Oreti Lake. On the way, we will cross the Tushinskaya Alazani River. We will return to Omalo for dinner. Tonight, a sauna will be just perfect!
Breakfast. In the morning, we depart from the hospitable Omalo. We load our bicycles and belongings into off-road vehicles. We will ascend to the Abano Pass by 4x4 vehicles. Now, it's time to get on our bikes! A thrilling 37-kilometer descent awaits us, following a breathtaking gravel serpentine road that will leave us speechless! We continue to Telavi, where we pack the bicycles into the support vehicle. Then, we transfer to Sighnaghi – the City of Love, where we will stay overnight in a guesthouse. Free time. Dinner at own expense.
Breakfast. We will travel to Tbilisi. On the way, we will visit Mtskheta and Jvari. In the evening, we will explore Old Tbilisi. Lunch and dinner at local restaurants. Overnight transfer to the airport. End of the cycling tour.
